It has been quite awhile since I added anything new to the book. I have my reasons (some would probably say excuses :) ) mainly that finding the energy and time to write is very hard with a wife, 3 kids and a startup.

Anyway, I’ve been talking with Manning lately trying to figure out what to do with this project. I was quite amazed to learn that 1000 or so of you purchased the MEAP edition even though it only contains 5 chapters and haven’t been updated in a long time. (by the way I’ve also recently learned that book pirating sites are offering the book for download, but that’s another story). Anyway, we’re trying to decide what we want to do and this is where I’d love to hear some feedback from you

1. Do you think the book is still relevant today?

2. Do you think the book should be restarted form scratch to reflect recent

3. Do we need to cancel the book and end this fiasco ? or push it though to completion?

4. How valuable do you find the information in the book so far?

I am ready to put in time to to add enough patterns/anti-patterns to make the book releasable. but since I know it takes oodles of time I don’t really have I really want to know I am not wasting my time

Please leave a comment/drop me an email if you have anything to say

Thanks (and thanks for continues patience so far)

I have very much enjoyed what I read so far and found the existing chapters very interesting. I would love to see this book completed. Although its been 6 months since I read the book I seem to remember most of the patterns were fairly technology agnostic which means its probably not too out of date. I wouldn't start the project from scatch, though it might be worth reviewing what has already been written in light of experience since the existing chapters were written.

I would love to see the book ultimately supported by a wiki that collects solution elements for given patterns.

I'll second what Duncan said - it would be great to see this completed. Going with the wiki idea, perhaps a model similar to what O'Reilly did with the "97 Things..." series by collecting entries in a wiki would be useful? Open the process up and have others to contribute as well?

I think the book is still very relevant today and also very much needed. I won't start from scratch though, but adding some new insights would be great. As I probably already mentioned, I learned a lot from only those 5 chapters.

I hope that you do find the time to finish the book but I would recommend to not finish it at any cost. Take care

1. Yes
2. Nope, I think you could add/modify as the book progresses but I can't see why you'd start from scratch.
3. For me its not a fiasco, I'd just push it through as/when you can.
4. I liked it a lot, its definitely in need of some love but its very easy to see it'll be a hugely valuable resource.

Definitely don't feel like your wasting your time on it, there's a clear audience for the book.

My company bought the book some months ago (uppon my request) and I will really be happy to see the book finished so that I can benefit from all the interesting patterns you are revealling, and which can still be used in every situation where service-oriented development is the option.

Wish you much success with it!

I really like the book, but if a more collaborative online format that is unpublished were to be used instead of finishing the book due to your time constraints (that could potentially evolve into a final book), I'm all for it.

The content you've put out so far is great, but I certainly understand the pressure a book deal includes and wouldn't be too upset if you decided not to finish. And yes, I bought the MEAP.

I love the book, it has been quite a large influencer for me in all that I do with messaging and would love to see it finished. That said I am game for something that is more open and collaborative. :)

Hi Dru, Chris, Olivier, Colin, Jan, Matt and Duncan,
Thanks for your kind comments. I'll take the idea of adding a wiki to Manning and see what they thing.
I'll do my best to add more stuff to the book :)

Thanks again

Absolutely! You should continue working on the book. I was the one of those people who purchased MEAP edition, and although I changed my mood from impatient to patient, I am still very interested to read the full book.

And btw I don't think the book should be restarted, but it may need to be refreshed taking into account that there's been several books and various blog discussions on this topic.
